This gorgeous and fruity cocktail is deep, sweet, tart, and slightly bitter. It's both an on-the-rock puree and shaken. I think it's lovely in autumn when you want a darker drink, especially for holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Notes: The vodka is Grey Goose.
THE BLACK DAHLIA
Ingredients: 1/2 cup blackberries, 3 tbsp. sugar, 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tsp. poppy seeds, two limes, 1.5 ounces vodka, 1 ounce Cointreau, ice, blackberry juice ice cubes (optional).
Makes 1.
1. Rim the glass: Add honey to a plate, then sprinkle 2 tbsp. of sugar and the poppy seeds on a separate plate. Dip the glass rim into the honey, then the poppy seed-sugar mixture.
2. Make the puree by blending the blackberries, 1 tbsp. of sugar and the juice of 1 lime (about 1 tbsp.) until smooth. Strain, if you prefer, through a strainer to remove the seeds.
3. Add ice, vodka, Cointreau, and juice of 1 lime into a cocktail shaker. Shake well.
4. Add five blackberry ice cubes (or regular ice cubes) into a short glass. Pour over the puree. Pour over the contents of the cocktail shaker. Stir gently. Garnish with a blackberry or two.
TIPS
Make blackberry ice cubes by freezing blackberry juice (or a mixed berry juice) into cubes. This takes about 6 hours.
